Discovering Your Recipe For Success!

You know when something good happens to you and you're surprised and think wow - Excellent I can't believe it, it just happened! For example when you have won an award, a race, business venture, got a big executive or corporate position or even just feel good and have had an excellent day. How often do you actually stop and reflect? Or when asked why or how you just say "I don't know, I was just lucky or it was my day".

Now if you don't know the answer to this question, i.e. you don't know how you got something or how you did it - how do you think you're going to do it again? Luck? Maybe but instead of thinking or relying on luck, why don't you reflect on how and what you did to actually get you there?

Once you find this out you have a recipe for success and guess what? You can actively go ahead and ensure you do it again! Now not everything will work a second time around as environments change but if you have your own success recipe you have your own strategy and you can go forth with a certain amount of confidence and knowing and actively pursue such success again and again and again.

With following your recipe you will have the key ingredients and method to ensure your cake turns out like a delicious cake and not some hard flat biscuit...

A great thing about taking time to reflect and gain your recipe for success is that you can do the opposite too to find out what your recipe for failure is and then not doing it again! For example, if you seem to be on a stress out ready to burn out roller coaster spiraling downwards, or something just never works or you're not getting what you want, reflect back in the same way as to a successful recipe to find out where you went and are going wrong. Now the key is once you find out your recipe for sometimes disaster or unhappiness don't do it again!

Here is an activity for you to consider doing to help you with getting your recipes:

Think back and put yourself into a time where you were a great success at something, usually something you really enjoy doing! Think about the things you did leading up to it, the circumstances that you put yourself in, actions you took, resources you used, thoughts you had (usually very positive) even ask a friend or colleague what and why they thought you were successful. Then write them all down step by step and arrange them into actions you took, specific things you 'didn't' do, thoughts you had, people who helped you, tools you used etc. And here you will have your key ingredients and method! Now go and apply it again and in due course reflect on that if it's still working or not!

When you reflect like this, just like planning reflection is so important as if you don't look back and acknowledge what and how you did something, you won't be consciously and actively making it happen or not happen again and thus taking control of your life and direction. Here is an example of one of mine for! You on how I got promoted at work once by focusing on the little things:

Ingredients:

  • Me
  • Job
  • My Spiritual Guider & Career Coach

Method:

  • Responded to all emails as soon as possible, if couldn't be actioned immediately, I still respond with acknowledgement and an expected time frame and followed through within that time frame
  • Followed up on every phone message within 24hours
  • My Spiritual Guider & Career Coach
  • Cleared my desk and inbox free of paper, unnecessary emails and any distractions, making room for efficiency and organisation and better work performance
  • Acted in a happy, positive and approachable manner to all colleagues and business associates at all times
  • Confident and honest in my job and abilities, if I didn't know something I would say so or ask
  • Paid attention to detail
  • Did the small things outstandingly well (this often stands out because everyone else focuses on the big things and forgets the little things that can really make a difference - do both)

Here is an example of one of my recipes for failure on how I lost a rowing race I could and should have won:

Ingredients:

  • Me
  • Training
  • Technique
  • Boat
  • Coach
  • Experience
  • A Race

Method:

  • Thought I was going to lose
